Doha: Qatar Museums has announced an open call for the second edition of the Sheikh Saoud Al Thani Project and Single Image Awards. The open call is part of Tasweer, a photography festival celebrating photographers from the West Asia and North Africa (WANA) region. The award, dedicated to Sheikh Saoud Al Thani (1966-2014) – one of Qatar’s greatest collectors who has largely shaped the extraordinary collection of the Museum of Islamic Art – invites photographers to submit their nominations before December 20 2021.

The Sheikh Saoud Project Award is an annual scholarship for photographers residing at WANA, supporting proposals to develop or complete a photographic project. The winners selected by the jury will each receive a grant of 30,000 QR to support their developing or new photographic project. The Sheikh Saoud Single Image Award is an open call for a single image that best represents the photographer’s personal experience and narrative.

Khalifa Ahmad Al Obaidly, Founding Director of Tasweer, said: “The Sheikh Saoud Al Thani Foundation has established the Sheikh Saoud Al Thani Prize as a celebration of photography, providing representation to aspiring and established photographers in West Asia and North Africa. Following the success of the first edition, which saw participants and winners of phenomenal talent and creativity, we look forward to receiving this year’s entries.

The annual photography competition is organized in partnership with the Sheikh Saoud Al Thani Foundation, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and the Social and Sports Contribution Fund (DAAM). As part of Tasweer’s collaboration with HMC, a selection of the winning images will be displayed on inpatient screens.

Qatar Museums founded Tasweer to nurture and shine the international spotlight on aspiring and established photographers and photographic communities in West Asia and North Africa. The initiative builds on the commitment of Qatar’s museums to foster artistic talent and support the country’s thriving cultural landscape.

WANA photographers are invited to submit their entries on www.tasweer.qa by December 20, 2021. The winners will be announced on March 24, 2022, at the launch of the next edition of Tasweer. The winning photographs will be on display at the Doha Tower during the 2022 Qatar Soccer World Cup.
