Foundation progress at 42-62 Hunter Street in Hunters Point, Queens

Foundation work is progressing at 42-62 Hunter Street, the site of a 12-story mixed-use building in Hunters Point, Queens. Designed by Michael Kang Architect and developed by ZL 2720 LLC, the 125-foot-tall structure will produce 30,647 square feet of residential and commercial space. JLS Group Construction LLC is the general contractor for the project, which is located at the corner of Hunter Street and 42nd Road. Hunter Square LLC’s Xi Zhao had previously filed permits for the development in late December 2020 and demolition of several low-rise structures at the site followed soon after.

Photographs show the site surrounded by planks of wood with work in progress below street level. The reinforced concrete foundation is practically complete and ready for the vertical progression on the superstructure. Steel rebar protrudes from locations where columns and interior walls will eventually be built. We can expect the edifice to rise above street level in the coming months and likely culminate by the end of the year, given the relatively small scale of the complex.

The main rendering depicts the building clad in glass, with the ground floor dedicated to the commercial component. Horizontal strips of metal divide the uniform surface of the reflective envelope, while a pair of canopies hang above the sidewalk, one for each side of the structure facing the street.

42-62 Hunter Street will house 18,948 square feet of residential space with 27 units averaging 701 square feet each, as well as 3,357 square feet of retail space. The development will also have a cellar and a 30 foot long backyard. The property is just one block east of the Queens Plaza subway station, served by the E, M, and R trains. Also nearby to the north is the Queensboro Plaza station, served by the 7, N trains. and W and Court Square station to the west, served by the 7 and G trains.

A completion date for 42-62 Hunter Street is shown on the board for summer 2023.
