In 2021, photography remains the most used form of visual communication. It is one of the best ways to convey product information to potential customers, build your brand presence, and gain consumer trust. Photos are also libraries of content on stock photography platforms such as Depositphotos.
The Depositphotos team analyzed contributor portfolios and discovered the types of stock images requested this year. As a result, we’ve compiled a list of photo trends that will guide your content and help you better understand your audience’s needs.
Check out our previous article, in which we discussed visual trends in communication: which visual trends will dominate communication in 2021?
1. Masks as a symbol
Medical masks and respirators have become a crucial part of our wardrobes. Going to the supermarket or walking down the street, we can find a variety of designs for these items. In a sense, it has become an additional source of information about the person wearing it, as well as a symbol of the weather. For this reason, photographers and marketers have started to use “masked” model images to convey their messages and document our reality.
2. Significant colors
Colors are powerful because they have the ability to evoke emotions. For example, warm and friendly color palettes make the audience feel safe, confident and upbeat. These days, positivity is the key. Symbols of Optimism ranks number one in Depositphotos’s list of trends in visual communication. Color alone can serve as a symbol whether you are working with abstract or product photographs.
3. Vertical shots
The pandemic has accelerated some processes that were already underway in marketing and technology. For example, the dominance of mobile devices over desktops when it comes to online activity.
In 2021, it is more important for an e-commerce brand to have a mobile-friendly app and website than a desktop-oriented web platform. Additionally, key social networks like TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp and many more are mobile-focused. For this reason, the demand for vertical photography is constantly increasing.
4. No more stereotypes
The trend for variety in visual communication is advancing every day. There is a growing demand for images with people of different ages, skin colors, cultures, health concerns, and genders. We see a reflection of this trend in advertising that celebrates diversity
Photos of smiling women have always been popular on stocks. However, images of women have changed dramatically over the years, especially with stereotypes that have become a thing of the past. The promising themes for photography today are female empowerment and body positivity.
5. Re-explore nature
In our Visual Trends 2021 report, we discussed nature’s ability to heal our minds in these turbulent times. We called this trend Solace in Nature. This hypothesis was recently confirmed by statistics. In recent months, customers of stock exchanges have more often purchased nature images.
There is a lot of potential hidden in the nature category for creations. Portraits may not be an option in many countries due to quarantine restrictions, but nature is always within reach for artists.
6. Still lifes in home studio
Social distancing has motivated artists to change things up in the still life genre. They look at their surroundings from a different perspective now and create unique visuals. Macro photography enthusiasts have achieved particular success in pushing the boundaries of product photography.
The trend towards minimalism, which has not disappeared for several years, has also appeared in still life photography. Thanks to this, we have abstract and surreal compositions as well as flat shots that can be used as main images or backgrounds by marketers.
7. Family circle
Photographers struggle to find subjects for their artistic endeavors. In order to organize a safe outdoor or studio photo shoot, there are many precautions that need to be taken. It can be time consuming and not always practical. If they want to generate portrait content on a regular basis, they can use your roommates, family members, pets, neighbors, and yourself as role models.
Soulful and heartfelt ‘house’ photography is becoming more prevalent in brand communication due to global lockdowns. The attention of modern consumers has shifted to their families and partners. For this reason, visuals depicting small communities are getting more attention.
8. Light nostalgia
People love to capture time through photography. For this reason, we all have childhood photos that bring back memories and make us want to share them.
Generations Y and Z are known for their interest over the past few decades (the 60s and 80s to be exact). This has already been reflected in modern advertising, film and fashion. The aesthetically pleasing images of the past are today at the peak of their popularity.
9. Disarm authenticity
The concept of authenticity is difficult to describe. Last year Depositphotos launched a competition dedicated to authentic photography (see the list of winners). Participants were invited to show what authenticity means to them.
Your brand’s answer to this question may be different from what most people think. However, everyone can agree that the authenticity of photography is the opposite of over-edited, staged and over-glamorous images. This type of content inspires less confidence in modern Internet users and they avoid it.
10. Dramatic aerial shot
Aerial photography remains in fashion and is growing in popularity. It has recently become the photographer’s solution to the rule of social distancing. What makes it even better is that the technology is cheap over time, so modern drones for professional photoshoots are becoming more affordable. For this reason, we are able to see more exceptional images on stock photography platforms.
As a result, aerial photography is also developing rapidly. The list of “ drone ” genres has been expanded to include aerial fashion, sports, and wedding photography. If you want to stand out with your marketing campaigns, now is the time to experiment with aerial photography.
Trends in photography reflect the way we see the world and how our values have evolved over time. Some trends indicate how far technology has advanced
In 2021, staged and over-edited photography is a thing of the past. It is replaced by real and authentic pictures. This is because we no longer want to focus on superficial topics. The global pandemic has had a huge impact on our interests, which is why we have become more sensitive to important things in life like nature and family.
